Deborah Helps
Practice Nurse and `Legacy Nurse Mentor,
Devon ICB and St Neots Surgery, Plymouth
I have worked in Primary Care as a Practice Nurse for 30 years, starting my career in a remote rural location and I now work in an inner city practice in Plymouth, Devon.
Starting in General Practice a year after qualifying, I have had the unique opportunity to see and experience first hand the challenges faced by new and newly qualified nurses in General Practice. I have also navigated the continual development and fast paced change that the role has demanded over the years.
Having worked as a Mentor within the practices , the Legacy Nurse Mentor Project was the chance to be involved in an exciting challenge towards the end of my career . It gave me the inspiration to continue nursing and a new found enthusiasm for my role.
I believe passionately that in order to recruit and retain Practice Nurses that they need to be supported clinically, personally and professionally. The Legacy Nurse Mentor Project has enabled a team of experienced Practice Nurses to link with new to practice nurses and forge a unique relationship, supporting them throughout their first year in their new role.
It has been a privilege to mentor these nurses and be part of an inspirational programme.
