Fireside chat: fertility journeys and the role of primary care
Fertility often begins in primary care, long before referrals or specialist clinics. This reflective fireside conversation explores fertility as it is experienced by patients at the very start of their journey, rather than how it appears in clinical pathways.
Hosted by Sophie Sulehria - both a host and a patient - alongside GP and fertility specialist Dr Ravina Bhanot, the session examines early fertility conversations in general practice and how these shape trust, confidence and outcomes. Drawing on lived experience and clinical insight, it will explore uncertainty, emotional load, normalised symptoms and the balance between reassurance and timely investigation, alongside the real-world pressures facing primary care.
The session will conclude with audience questions and reflections on the pivotal role primary care plays at the beginning of a fertility journey.
By the end of this session, attendees will be able to:
- Recognise the pivotal role primary care plays at the very start of a fertility journey.
- Understand the emotional context patients often bring to initial fertility conversations.
- Reflect on how commonly normalised symptoms, such as pain, cycle changes or age-related concerns, may warrant further exploration.
- Identify realistic approaches to providing fertility support within the time and resource constraints of primary care.
- Consider practical ways to support patients during referral and waiting periods.
