Rewriting the ageing narrative: lifestyle medicine, longevity, and health span in general practice

25 Feb 2026
GP Clinical Theatre sponsored by Oviva

This presentation explores the growing role of lifestyle medicine in supporting healthy ageing, longevity, and the prevention of frailty, reframing ageing as a modifiable biological process rather than an inevitable decline. Drawing on emerging evidence around biological age, cardiovascular health, and population studies such as the Blue Zones, the session highlights how relatively small, sustainable lifestyle changes can have a significant impact on long-term health outcomes.

Designed for general practitioners, the talk focuses on practical, evidence-based interventions that can be delivered within routine consultations, including diet, movement, sleep, stress, weight management, and social connection. Attendees will gain simple frameworks to support shared decision-making, encourage patient engagement, and translate complex science into achievable actions, empowering GPs to play a central role in improving healthspan, not just lifespan.

  • 1. Explain the concept of biological ageing and healthspan and its relevance to frailty, cardiovascular risk, and long-term outcomes in general practice.
  • 2. Recognise the impact of lifestyle factors - including diet, physical activity, sleep, weight, stress, and social connection on biological ageing and chronic disease.
  • 3. Apply practical frameworks to integrate lifestyle medicine into routine GP consultations.
  • 4. Identify simple, sustainable interventions that can support patients to improve healthspan and reduce future disease risk.
